After many months of work by Augusta County’s planning staff and significant input from local residents, Augusta County’s Comprehensive Plan is now ready for presentation to the public and final approval. Every locality must have one of these state-mandated in-depth planning documents designed to create a strategic vision for how the community will grow and develop over the next 20 years.
In order for this 300+ page document to become Augusta’s official “roadmap” to the future, it must be presented to the people at two public hearings, one with the Planning Commission (Tuesday Oct. 14) and then at the Board of Supervisors (Wednesday Oct. 22). At each meeting, the respective boards want to hear from county residents about the plan before voting on whether or not to adopt it.
As its name implies, this plan is a comprehensive look at the county and includes goals and strategies about housing, transportation, schools, farming, medical care, economic development, natural resources, recreation and so much more.
These two meetings will be your last opportunities to comment on the plan before its adoption, so make your voice heard by providing feedback.
Take the time to read through the Comp Plan’s Executive Summary. The last few pages of the summary provide a great tool that will help you navigate to specific pages within the overall plan to find topics that are most important to you.
If you’ve been following the process from the beginning, you might find it useful to view this document with highlighted areas indicating revisions that were made based on public feedback between the last draft and the current one up for adoption.
If you are a landowner, you may also want to look online at the proposed Future Land Use Map of the county and see if the potential future use of your land is what you think it should be. If it is not, let the county know.

If this is truly going to be a “people’s” plan, then your attendance at the meetings or feedback to the county is vital. Let the county planners and leaders know what you like about the plan and its land use maps and also tell them where you want to see more work done.
Your input on the plan is important now and to future generations whom we hope will continue to enjoy the rural and agricultural character that is Augusta County.
