As they consider future growth, Harrisonburg City transportation planners are proposing traffic solutions for Erickson Ave between South High St (RT 42) and South Main St (RT 11) and want to know what you think. Here is a short slideshow about the project and a quick survey to collect your feedback. The survey is open until October 16.
This study builds on already funded but not-yet-built improvements at the Erickson Ave and Pear St intersection and along the South Main St Corridor.
The proposed improvements specifically address increased traffic volume and challenges with left turns at the South Main St (RT 11) and South High St (RT 42) intersections with Erickson Ave.
At South Main St (RT 11) and Erickson Ave, transportation planners are proposing a ‘partial quadrant roadway intersection’ since the intersection is constrained by the bridge on one side and cannot be expanded.
The new intersection design will reroute left turns from Erickson around a newly constructed block of connector roads. You can learn more about the intersection design and its potential safety and efficiency benefits on VDOT’s website here.
Weigh in on Erickson Ave Improvements
Years ago, the Alliance supported the Stone Spring connector that feeds into Erickson Ave as a much needed east-west connector through the city, close to the town center. Given the continued growth—with new development and a new school south of town—it is prudent to consider improvements that ensure the safety and efficiency of all users: pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. This plan is part of that necessary process.
As always, your perspective is invaluable in shaping our community. Please review the plan, click the survey link, and share your feedback with transportation planners so they can propose the most effective, best-fit solutions for Erickson Avenue.
