We, once again, need to show strong, unified community support for the 49-mile Shenandoah Rail-to-Trail from Broadway to Front Royal. We all need to chime in one more time that yes, we want this trail.
We, once again, need to show strong, unified community support for the 49-mile Shenandoah Rail-to-Trail from Broadway to Front Royal. We all need to chime in one more time that yes, we want this trail.
If 2025 was a test, it was also a proof of concept. Our deep-rooted relationships kept vital projects moving in creative ways. When funding was at its most uncertain last spring, community members like you stepped up to ensure we didn’t miss a beat.
This week, a surprise move from the state has put our entire five-year effort in jeopardy. Community members need to take action this weekend to stop a proposal that threatens to wipe out the vision of the Shenandoah Rail Trail as a 49-mile contiguous destination trail.
Having reviewed VDOTs Phase 1 report, we remain confident that the highest and best use of public funding is the Shenandoah Rail Trail.
Spending time in the Shenandoah Valley means feeling connected to water, whether that’s through fond memories of stream stomping, fishing, swimming in a nearby lake or simply appreciating the local water sources with which we are blessed.
We believe that in order to be motivated to protect a resource, one must have a personal, intimate connection, and the Shenandoah Rail Trail will create opportunities to inspire clean-water stewards up and down the Valley.
Communities with a strong sense of place become passionate when threats loom that could alter their way of life. However, that passion is often accompanied by feelings of powerlessness.
This year’s summit will highlight the potential for economic development when transportation and recreation meet.
The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation intends to purchase the rail corridor for a different project and they plan to use the state funds allocated for the Shenandoah Rail Trail.
The amended budget signed by Governor Youngkin on September 14, 2023 included language in support of the Shenandoah Rail Trail.
