In addition to its land preservation efforts, Scenic 340 also leads Project Redbud. in the past two years, Project Redbud volunteers have planted more than 500 native trees, mostly redbud, serviceberry, and sumac, along Route 340 to replace the plantings removed by VDOT’s bridge replacement. At the last inspection in fall 2018, about 80 percent of the trees were still alive—so, at least the trees have benefitted from the abundance of rain. If you drive the corridor now you will see the young tree seedlings growing in their protective tubes—and this fall the redbud team will be out there planting again.
