Electric cooperatives; net energy metering for agricultural customer-generators, report.
This bill by Delegate Gooditis aims to increase the ability of farmers who are served by electric cooperatives to offset their energy usage with on-site solar panels by allowing ‘net energy metering.’ Many farm operations have multiple connections to the grid, and this legislation will allow the energy produced from on-site solar panels to offset all the connections owned by the same producer and in reasonable proximity to the solar installation. The legislation also creates a workgroup to address concerns of farmers and electric cooperatives to ensure success of the program and to assess other ways that small-scale solar energy projects can meet on-farm energy needs. A report from this workgroup is expected December 1, 2022.
