SIGNED – HB 2165 – Sale of land for delinquent taxes
Tax delinquent property; sale of land for delinquent taxes.
This legislation extends the timeline in the state’s process for the sale of land to pay for delinquent taxes. As we learned in the 2020 General Assembly session with the passage of the Heirs Property Act, land ownership can be complicated, especially when land has been informally passed from one generation of owners to another without a formal will. This legislation will provide more time for a landowner to pay delinquent taxes and more time for research into property like heirs property’s ownership to allow joint landowners to have an opportunity to save the land from being sold for payment of delinquent taxes. Ultimately, this is another step towards ensuring historically marginalized landowners of color have a fair opportunity to keep their family land.
