SIGNED – HB 1750 / SB 1193 – Dairy Producer Assistance

Dairy Producer Margin Coverage Premium Assistance Program; established.

The dairy industry in Virginia is suffering, which is particularly troublesome in the Shenandoah Valley where Rockingham and Augusta counties hold two of the top-five spots for milk production in the state. HB 1750 will increase access to the federal Dairy Margin Protection Program for Virginia dairy farmers that also participate in certain best management practices. The Dairy Margin Protection Program pays dairy farmers the difference between the price they’re able to sell milk for and the average cost of feed for their cows. Essentially, it’s insurance, and like insurance, there is a premium cost associated with participating in the program. This bill will reimburse that premium cost to farmers participating in the federal program.
