With over 20 years of experience in parks management and land conservation\, Nathan was appointed as a Deputy Director of Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation by then Governor Northam in 2021 and is currently the Director of Community Conservation and Government relations for the Virginia Outdoor Foundation. During this time Nathan has been recognized as a leader in the Richmond community with awards ranging from “Top 40 under 40” by Style Weekly in 2011 to GRTC’s “Black History Month: Local History Maker” in 2017 and most recently honored as one of Richmond Times Dispatch’s 2018 “Person of the Year.” In addition\, Nathan also sits on several local boards and National Advisory Councils including Groundwork RVA as a founding board member and current board President\, an Advisory Board member of the Capital Region Land Conservancy\, and a former member of the Virginia Council on Environmental Justice.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]\nEsther Nizer\nEsther M Nizer of Elkton\, VA is the youngest of four children born to Thomas and Margaret Nizer. Esther attended the Newtown Elementary School\, a Rosenwald school\, in Elkton and graduated from Elkton High School. She received a B.S. in Health & Physical Education from Morgan State University (College)\, and a M.S.Ed. in Adult Education Human Resource Development (AHRD) from James Madison University. An Information Technology Training and Development Manager\, Esther retired from James Madison University after 20+ Years in 2020. \nAs a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church\, Elkton\, VA Esther has served as a Sunday School teacher (Adult and Youth)\, Church Clerk and currently serves as the Treasurer/Financial Clerk. Esther has been a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority\, Inc. for over 45 years she served as the advisor to the Iota Alpha Chapter on the campus of James Madison University for over 12 years. Active in the community\, Esther has served on the Board of Directors for the Elkton Area United Services (EAUS)\, Elkton Cemetery Commission and the Elkton Downtown Revitalization Cooperation (EDRC). She has served as the president for four years and the treasurer for two years for the Harrisonburg/Rockingham NAACP. Esther is currently serving on the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Board appointed by Governor Terry McAuliff. She is on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the North Fork Shenandoah River and serves as its Treasurer. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\nIf you don’t recognize Lynn Cameron’s face\, you will probably recognize her name. She’s been a local ambassador for the million-acre George Washington National Forest—sharing her knowledge and appreciation for our extraordinary public lands—for decades. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/D7qChA5wocs” align=”center”][vc_column_text]While working as a reference librarian at James Madison University\, Lynn and her husband started exploring our neighboring public lands and got involved with Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Not too long after\, they adopted their own sections of trail to maintain. From there\, her fate was set. Lynn has spent the past four decades advocating for protection of our public lands. If you missed the webinar\, here is a link to the recording\, and we’d love to have you join us for the walk either way. \nOur tour will begin at Turner Pavilion where we’ll have a 30 minute discussion followed by an about 6-block walk with A LOT to look at. In partnership with Clair Mellinger from EMU at Highland Retreat\, he has monitored the migration of the Northern Saw-whet owl with for twenty years. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Ownership of land represents wealth\, potential\, community\, sustainability and economic opportunity for the next generation. Yet\, across our country\, Black and Indigenous landowners have lost land at rates much higher than their white counterparts. In 1910\, there were 218\,000 Black farmers\, and they owned roughly 15 million acres of land. After the turn of the century\, there were only 18\,000 Black farmers with a little over 2 million acres of land.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3873″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1611329284770{margin-bottom: -2px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1611329278874{margin-top: -2px !important;}”]Betty Kilby Baldwin with her father on their family farm in Warren County.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]This enormous loss of land and opportunity for Black farmers and their descendants wasn’t just a chance happening. DESCRIPTION:In 2010\, Shenandoah Forum announced it would host a series of public forums and workshops – dubbed Farm-to-Table — focused on strengthening the agricultural base of Shenandoah County\, both economically and environmentally. While aimed specifically for the farming community\, the sessions were also intended for consumers who value local resources and look for ways to ensure their availability and public officials seeking to realize the vision of the Comprehensive Plan for a rural character and sustainable agricultural future for Shenandoah County. Topics for the sessions included farm succession\, farm transition and options for expanding farm revenue and adding value.
