SUMMARY:Soup’s On—Holiday Open House
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Stop by our office in New Market to talk conservation in the Valley and vote for your favorite staff-made soup (entries announced soon)! We’ll also have beverages and other light fare to enjoy. \nThis will be a casual\, drop-in affair\, with a chance to catch up with your neighbors and your county coordinator and other members of our staff working on conservation and outreach. You can also get a tour of the beautifully renovated historic Calvert house we’re now calling ‘home.’ \nWe’re excited to take a beat and celebrate a successful 2024 with our supporters—hope you can join us![/vc_column_text]\n[vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1734385599452{padding-top: 15px !important;background-color: #e3f1da !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1702357275860{margin-top: 5px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1734386055769{margin-top: -15px !important;}”]\nAnd the winner is…. Executive Director Kate (and Mac) Wofford!\n[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1702357736333{margin-right: 25px !important;margin-left: 25px !important;}”][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”8820″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Jan Bailey’s Maine Fish Chowder \nIngredients \n2 lbs. cod\, haddock or pollock (wild frozen cod from grocery store works well)\n3-4 large potatoes\, cubed\, skins on\n2-3 chopped onions\n2-3 tablespoons flour\n1 pint cream (not half and half)\n1 stick butter\n2 bay leaves\, thyme\, salt and pepper\n1/2 cup real sherry (I use 1/3 to 1/2)[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Preparation \nI don’t think it matters in what order to add this to that\, as long as they all wind up in the same pot! \n1. Cube potatoes. Cook in salted water\, just enough water to cover the potatoes. \n2. Cook fish in water\, just enough to cover it. Top with bay leaves\, salt and pepper\, sprinkle thyme all across the top of the fish. \n3. Melt butter in another pot and cook onion until soft. Add flour\, then cream. Thicken. Then add fish and fish water. \n4. Add potatoes and potato water to fish\, etc. Season with salt and pepper and thyme to taste. (I have to wait till it has settled before I can judge salt and pepper.) \n5. Add sherry. Warm up or store in refrigerator\, and further thicken if necessary. Gets better as the days pass by![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Great Community Give in Rockingham and Harrisonburg
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Once a year\, the Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham brings together nonprofits that make the Valley a better place to live\, work\, and play for one big day of online giving—and that day is April 16\, from 6 AM to 8 PM.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”? Donate to the Alliance in the Great Community Give (now\, or April 16!) ?” style=”custom” custom_background=”#00984C” custom_text=”#FFFFFF” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.greatcommunitygive.org%2Forganizations%2Falliance-for-the-shenandoah-valley” el_id=”strong”][vc_column_text css=””]From conservation to the arts\, children’s programs\, animal rescues and community services\, this is your chance to explore and support the incredible work being done in our region—last year the community collectively raised over two million dollars for local nonprofits![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]You may have recently received our letter about the challenges facing farmers due to frozen federal funding and our plan to help. If you’ve already donated—thank you. If not\, we’d be honored if you’d include the Alliance in your giving plans for the Great Community Give.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Here’s why:[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? We’re working hard to keep conservation programs that support farmers and protect water sources funded and fully staffed.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? We’re still pushing for the Shenandoah Rail Trail—momentum slowed last year\, but we’re not giving up. A new VDOT survey is live now—make your voice heard and support the Shenandoah Rail–to–Trail.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? We’ve expanded our conservation speed-dating workshops to match landowners of all parcel sizes\, most recently in the Keezletown area\, with conservation programs to meet their conservation goals.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? For the last 3 years we’ve convened the Smith Creek Watershed Partnership where landowners and partner conservation groups are implementing innovative practices to improve water quality in Smith Creek.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? And—great news! Our project to improve the Silver Lake walking path is complete! Mark your calendar for June 26 to join us for a celebration and check out the new educational signs and pollinator gardens.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]These are just a few highlights—we’re always tracking land use proposals to ensure that growth and development is in line with the community supported comprehensive plan so that working farmland is protected and our communities remain vibrant\, livable and walkable.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]So\, whether you’re giving on April 16 or jumping in early (yes\, early giving is open now!)\, we’d love to see your name scroll across our donor board.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”?
