SUMMARY:Honoring Valley Treasure Friendly City Food Co-op
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Announcing our 2024 Valley Treasure” title_align=”separator_align_left” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”Friendly City Food Co-op” font_container=”tag:h1|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Bitter%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffriendlycity.coop|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=””]This year\, we’re excited to present the 2024 Valley Treasure award to the Friendly City Food Co-op. Since opening its doors in Harrisonburg in 2011\, the co-op has made a lasting impact on the local community and beyond\, providing local\, organic and allergy-friendly food and products while building a stronger connection between people and producers.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”8527″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Friendly City Food Co-op was started by a group of committed community members who wanted a local grocery store with healthy\, local food options. Their vision came to life through the 100% community-owned co-op\, starting with just a handful of owners and now expanding to over three thousand. This model means the co-op will always truly serve the community\, meeting the real-time needs of owners\, shoppers and producers.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Friendly City Food Co-op is about more than just accessing healthy\, local food—it’s about building community. In their own words\, the co-op’s intent is to create fair and friendly relationships\, a vibrant local economy\, healthy and informed consumers\, and to be good stewards of the environment through conscientious and sustainable use of resources.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]To that end\, they host unique market days\, offer classes that anyone can plug into\, accept and match food assistance vouchers and commit to composting and recycling in their operations. And there is the ever-popular $1 Table\, where all through the Valley growing season\, local produce is available to mix-and-match for $1 a pound. The co-op is truly dedicated to strengthening and improving the health of our community. Their reach extends beyond the shelves\, fostering connections and providing resources that benefit everyone.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”8559″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text css=””]At the Alliance\, we work hard to protect agricultural land and support the farmers and producers who steward it and the communities that benefit from their efforts. Friendly City Food Co-op’s commitment to connect people to their local farmers and producers with an eye towards a vibrant economy\, healthy communities and environmental stewardship aligns perfectly with our mission.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]As one of the nominators put it\, “Having a locally owned grocery store is good for the community in countless ways\, but here are a few that come easily to mind. The downtown area was a food desert and desperately needed a place to buy real food. The store brings the community together with lots of classes and opportunities to have a voice over products they carry.”[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Honoring Friendly City Food Co-op” title_align=”separator_align_left” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]Join us in celebrating Friendly City Food Co-op on Friday\, October 18th at 10 AM. We will honor both the Friendly City Food Co-op and North Star Sari Carp with a special ceremony at the co-op’s patio area. Cube potatoes. Cook in salted water\, just enough water to cover the potatoes. \n2. Cook fish in water\, just enough to cover it. Top with bay leaves\, salt and pepper\, sprinkle thyme all across the top of the fish. \n3. Melt butter in another pot and cook onion until soft. Add flour\, then cream. Thicken. Then add fish and fish water. \n4. Add potatoes and potato water to fish\, etc. Season with salt and pepper and thyme to taste. (I have to wait till it has settled before I can judge salt and pepper.) \n5. Add sherry. Warm up or store in refrigerator\, and further thicken if necessary. Gets better as the days pass by![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Great Community Give in Rockingham and Harrisonburg
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Once a year\, the Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham brings together nonprofits that make the Valley a better place to live\, work\, and play for one big day of online giving—and that day is April 16\, from 6 AM to 8 PM.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”? Donate to the Alliance in the Great Community Give (now\, or April 16!) ?” style=”custom” custom_background=”#00984C” custom_text=”#FFFFFF” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.greatcommunitygive.org%2Forganizations%2Falliance-for-the-shenandoah-valley” el_id=”strong”][vc_column_text css=””]From conservation to the arts\, children’s programs\, animal rescues and community services\, this is your chance to explore and support the incredible work being done in our region—last year the community collectively raised over two million dollars for local nonprofits![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]You may have recently received our letter about the challenges facing farmers due to frozen federal funding and our plan to help. If you’ve already donated—thank you. If not\, we’d be honored if you’d include the Alliance in your giving plans for the Great Community Give.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Here’s why:[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? We’re working hard to keep conservation programs that support farmers and protect water sources funded and fully staffed.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? We’re still pushing for the Shenandoah Rail Trail—momentum slowed last year\, but we’re not giving up. A new VDOT survey is live now—make your voice heard and support the Shenandoah Rail–to–Trail.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? We’ve expanded our conservation speed-dating workshops to match landowners of all parcel sizes\, most recently in the Keezletown area\, with conservation programs to meet their conservation goals.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? For the last 3 years we’ve convened the Smith Creek Watershed Partnership where landowners and partner conservation groups are implementing innovative practices to improve water quality in Smith Creek.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]? And—great news! Our project to improve the Silver Lake walking path is complete! Mark your calendar for June 26 to join us for a celebration and check out the new educational signs and pollinator gardens.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]These are just a few highlights—we’re always tracking land use proposals to ensure that growth and development is in line with the community supported comprehensive plan so that working farmland is protected and our communities remain vibrant\, livable and walkable.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]So\, whether you’re giving on April 16 or jumping in early (yes\, early giving is open now!)\, we’d love to see your name scroll across our donor board.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”?
