SUMMARY:Join us in honoring our 2022 Valley Treasure - Lynn Cameron
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\nIf you don’t recognize Lynn Cameron’s face\, you will probably recognize her name. She’s been a local ambassador for the million-acre George Washington National Forest—sharing her knowledge and appreciation for our extraordinary public lands—for decades. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/D7qChA5wocs” align=”center”][vc_column_text]While working as a reference librarian at James Madison University\, Lynn and her husband started exploring our neighboring public lands and got involved with Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Not too long after\, they adopted their own sections of trail to maintain. From there\, her fate was set. Lynn has spent the past four decades advocating for protection of our public lands. In addition to serving as past president of the Virginia Wilderness Committee\, Lynn is the co-chair of Friends of the Shenandoah Mountain. \nIn those roles\, Lynn has spent the last 20 years connecting a diverse network of forest users to build a broad base of support for the 92\,000 acre Shenandoah Mountain National Scenic Area in the George Washington National Forest that will ensure diverse plant and wildlife habitat\, clean water for communities downstream\, and a variety of recreational opportunities\, such as hunting\, fishing\, hiking\, camping\, mountain biking\, and nature study for future generations. \nIf you’re lucky\, you’ll run in to Lynn in the woods on a hike and you’ll get to experience her deep love\, vast knowledge and commitment to the natural world.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Honoring Lynn” title_align=”separator_align_left”][vc_btn title=”WATCH THE VIRTUAL CEREMONY” align=”center” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%2FY6H-B9q7oJk|target:_blank”][vc_row_inner content_placement=”top”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”5715″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]\nSteven David Johnson \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1655826375317{margin-top: -20px !important;}”]\nWebsite\nInstagram\nFlickr \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]We were excited to honor Lynn Cameron’s work to preserve and protect Shenandoah Mountain with a lecture by Steven David Johnson\, a conservation photographer and Professor of Visual and Communication Arts at Eastern Mennonite University. \nSteve’s photography of the natural world\, including photos of many of the critters on Shenandoah Mountain that will enjoy the protection offered by the National Scenic Area designation\, has appeared in Orion\, Nature Conservancy Magazine\, Ranger Rick\, Virginia Wildlife\, National Science Teachers Association Press books and numerous conservation publications and journals. \nSteve is also vice-president of the Virginia Wilderness Committee\, a close partner of Friends of the Shenandoah Mountain. When he’s not in the office\, you’ll probably find him crouched next to a vernal pool photographing Appalachian salamanders.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]\nSarah Francisco\, director of Southern Environmental Law Center’s Virginia office and Alliance board member presented the Valley Treasure award to Lynn. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]About Valley Treasure  \nThe Shenandoah Valley is an extraordinary place\, with its iconic farming landscapes\, beautiful streams\, world-class public forest lands\, and rich cultural history. SUMMARY:Solarize Shenandoah Information Session
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\nWith the sharp increase in utility scale solar proposals on ag land in the Valley\, we’ve been working hard to tool up localities and farmers to navigate siting and design considerations. At the same time\, we are pushing for more programs and incentives for rooftop solar. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Enter Solarize Shenandoah! \nThrough Solarize Shenandoah\, Shenandoah Valley homeowners and businesses can sign up through June 30 to access discounted prices on rooftop and ground-mounted systems and get connected with a pre-selected vetted installer. \nThe Alliance is co-hosting an informational webinar on June 2 at 6pm. We’ll introduce you to folks from the nonprofit\, Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) that manages the Solarize Shenandoah program. You’ll learn about how solar works\, how the Solarize Shenandoah program works\, and how you can benefit. \nIf you’ve been considering solar\, Solarize Shenandoah is a one-stop-shop to find out where on your property would be the best place for solar\, how much energy you can expect to produce to offset your specific usage and other available opportunities for battery storage or car charging through the program.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1653339138524{background-color: #e3f1da !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”5585″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” onclick=”custom_link” img_link_target=”_blank” css=”.vc_custom_1653328114500{margin-bottom: -2px !important;}” link=”https://solarizeva.org”][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1653327889167{margin-top: -2px !important;}”]\nSolarize Shenandoah\nThursday\, June 2\, 6pm\n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”REGISTER FOR THE WEBINAR” style=”custom” custom_background=”#248dc1″ custom_text=”#ffffff” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.monday.com%2Fforms%2F87fb19acc27b3185207ea2eae2be8bf3%3Fr%3Duse1″][vc_btn title=”SIGN UP FOR A FREE ASSESSMENT” style=”custom” custom_background=”#248dc1″ custom_text=”#ffffff” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsolarizeva.org|target:_blank”][vc_empty_space height=”10px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\nYou can register for the webinar here\, or if you’d like to go ahead and get started with Solarize Shenandoah\, you can get the ball rolling by filling out this short form. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_column_text]Image by D Cannon from Pixabay[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Family land\, farming and race in Virginia
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Ownership of land represents wealth\, potential\, community\, sustainability and economic opportunity for the next generation. Yet\, across our country\, Black and Indigenous landowners have lost land at rates much higher than their white counterparts. In 1910\, there were 218\,000 Black farmers\, and they owned roughly 15 million acres of land. After the turn of the century\, there were only 18\,000 Black farmers with a little over 2 million acres of land.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3873″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1611329284770{margin-bottom: -2px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1611329278874{margin-top: -2px !important;}”]Betty Kilby Baldwin with her father on their family farm in Warren County.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]This enormous loss of land and opportunity for Black farmers and their descendants wasn’t just a chance happening. Rather\, it is an important\, yet mostly overlooked\, part of our history of racial injustice all across America.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This webinar will explore the topics of family land\, farming and race. We’ll also hear about Virginia’s recent efforts to slow the loss of family-owned farmland and explore next steps to ensure that Black families and other historically underrepresented groups can continue to farm in the Valley and across Virginia.
