She’s been a local ambassador for the million-acre George Washington National Forest—sharing her knowledge and appreciation for our extraordinary public lands—for decades. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/D7qChA5wocs” align=”center”][vc_column_text]While working as a reference librarian at James Madison University\, Lynn and her husband started exploring our neighboring public lands and got involved with Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Not too long after\, they adopted their own sections of trail to maintain. From there\, her fate was set. Lynn has spent the past four decades advocating for protection of our public lands. Parking is available in the Municipal Lot connected to City Hall or in the Water Street Parking Deck. \nIn the case of rain\, we will plan to reschedule for Friday May 21.

In partnership with Clair Mellinger from EMU at Highland Retreat\, he has monitored the migration of the Northern Saw-whet owl with for twenty years. SUMMARY:Family land\, farming and race in Virginia
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Ownership of land represents wealth\, potential\, community\, sustainability and economic opportunity for the next generation. Yet\, across our country\, Black and Indigenous landowners have lost land at rates much higher than their white counterparts. In 1910\, there were 218\,000 Black farmers\, and they owned roughly 15 million acres of land. After the turn of the century\, there were only 18\,000 Black farmers with a little over 2 million acres of land.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3873″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1611329284770{margin-bottom: -2px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1611329278874{margin-top: -2px !important;}”]Betty Kilby Baldwin with her father on their family farm in Warren County.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]This enormous loss of land and opportunity for Black farmers and their descendants wasn’t just a chance happening.
